Raised in Germany and performing throughout Europe, the Japanese pianist Tsuzumi Namikawa sees the concert stage as a place of encounter—a space where music comes to life through the shared experience between performer and audience. For her, music is created in moments of genuine connection, moments that inspire spontaneity, freedom, and artistic expression.

In 2026, she made her Japanese debut at Symphony Hall Osaka, performing Frédéric Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1. The performance was met with enthusiastic acclaim and marked not only a significant milestone in her international concert career, but also a deeply meaningful return to her Japanese roots.

Born in Asahikawa, Japan, in 1997, Tsuzumi Namikawa began piano lessons at the age of five. At the age of nine, she moved to Germany with her family. She is the recipient of numerous prizes at national and international competitions, including First Prize at the 13th International Fryderyk Chopin Competition in Mariánské Lázně (Marienbad) and the International Piano Prize Napolinova in Naples, as well as Second Prize at the Carl Filtsch Competition in Sibiu and the International Schimmel Piano Competition in Braunschweig. She was also twice awarded the Louis Spohr Youth Music Prize by the City of Braunschweig.

Her concert engagements have taken her beyond Germany to France, the Czech Republic, Finland, the Netherlands, and Japan.

Since 2017, Tsuzumi Namikawa has maintained a close artistic collaboration with Professor Ewa Kupiec. Having completed both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees, she is currently pursuing the Soloist Programme (Soloklasse) at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover. While the Romantic repertoire lies at the heart of her artistic identity, she is particularly devoted to Polish music, especially the works of Frédéric Chopin, and maintains a broad and versatile repertoire.

Her pianistic education began with several distinguished teachers, including Professor Wolfgang Zill. As an ERASMUS student, she spent a semester at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, studying with Professor Jonas Vitaud. She has also received important artistic inspiration through masterclasses with distinguished musicians including Ewa Pobłocka, Anna Malikova, Janina Fialkowska, and Kevin Kenner.

Since 2026, she has served as a lecturer at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover.

Her conviction that music reveals its greatest power through the direct encounter between performer and audience also formed the basis of her TEDx Talk at RWTH Aachen University in 2025, where she spoke about the unique experience of live performance and human connection through music.
